How much does a bookkeeper cost for a small business?

An Honest Answer from a Dayton Bookkeeper

At Black Dog Financial, monthly bookkeeping plans start at $300 a month, & quarterly plans start at $500 a quarter. I build a custom proposal for every client based on your needs & your budget, so your number reflects what you actually need. The easiest way to get a real number is a free 30-minute consultation.

Here’s what I can take off your plate:

  • Accounts receivable & accounts payable

  • Bank reconciliation for checking, savings, loans, Shopify, Square & Stripe

  • Payroll services

  • QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online conversion

  • Monthly reporting

We can provide full bookkeeping, work with your current bookkeeping staff, step in for a short-term project, or provide training.

Monthly or quarterly?

Monthly plans start at $300 a month & quarterly plans start at $500 a quarter. Monthly works well if you want regular reports to make decisions with. Quarterly can fit a smaller business with fewer transactions.

What changes the price?

The things that usually move the price are how many accounts you have, how many transactions come through each month, whether you have payroll, & how far behind the books are.

If your books are a mess, that's okay! Coming in and supporting a business owner who hasn't done any bookkeeping is one of my favorite things to do, & a review of what you need is available.

Other costs to plan for:

I do ask that all of my clients have a QuickBooks Online subscription. For payroll, I recommend Gusto because it's user & budget-friendly.

Bookkeepers typically do not help you file your taxes. Ahead of tax season I will prepare everything you need to give to your tax preparer. I will also work with your preparer to answer questions related to business finances.

Bookkeeping for HVAC, plumbing & electrical contractors

If you run a trades business, the Cash Flow Optimizer plan adds contractor-friendly categorization (COGS vs overhead), a simple cash flow view, & a monthly cash flow plan for payroll, taxes, vendors, debt & big purchases. It also includes a monthly review call with clear action steps.
